MOZEZ SINGH

I am storyteller & a filmmaker.

I have been working as a writer, producer and director in the Mumbai TV & Film Industry since 2001. Before that, I worked in the music industry in New York City, and it was while I was working on the production of music videos that my desire to tell stories visually overtook every other ambition I had in me, and this desire continues to soar.

Since I moved back to India in 2001, I have written, produced and directed fiction, non-fiction, reality, fashion, music, current affairs and talk shows for the numerous TV channels like Star Plus, Star One, Sony, Zee TV, FTV, MTV, Channel V, AajTak, Headlines Today.

I have also produced and directed TV Commercials and music videos. Some of the brands I have directed TVC’s for are Budweiser, World Gold Council, Elle Magazine, Tata Tea, Breast Cancer Awareness and I have produced and directed music videos for Sony Music, Universal Music.

I recently directed a short film, Freedom is Me, on one of the biggest electronica music festival in the world, The Sunburn Music Festival For Viacom-Phantom-Percept-Anurag Kashyap Films.

I have co produced a feature film, Peddlers with Anurag Kashyap & Guneet Monga. Peddlers was in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival, 2012.

I have written and produced a feature film, White Noise, which traveled to many international film festivals, Karachi, Florence, Chicago and won both critical and box office acclaim. Following this, I line produced an international feature film, A Mighty Heart, starring Angelina Jolie, produced by Brad Pitt and Paramount Studios and directed by award winning director Michael Winterbottom.

I am currently working on my feature film debut project as a director.

My other passion is product design. In 2012, I designed my first line of interiors and home accessories called Mughal Pop. The Mughal Pop collection retails from Good Earth, one of the leading lifestyle brands in India. One of the most celebrated pieces from this collection, the armchair Akbar is a Star, won best furniture design at the Elle Décor International Awards 2012, and this collection has been extensively featured in both the Indian & International mainstream press. I am also the co-founder of stART&D™ an inventive, edgy digital movement to promote emerging art & design, produce signature concepts that explore the grey area between those disciplines.

Since I love writing on popular culture, I have had the wonderful opportunity to express my views on my own bi-monthly column for The Indian Express called Babylon, and I’ve written extensively for other publications like The Times of India, The Indian Express, India Today, Hello, Vogue, Bazaar, Elle, Outlook, Seminar, Verve, Platform, Elle Décor, Architectural Digest. I am also a contributing writer with Conde Nast India.

I am a founder member of Faith’s Heal, an organization that aims to remove stigma and discrimination about HIV/AIDS through the power of Faith and am allied with many NGO”s towards achieving this end.

Director Producer

SUNBURN: FREEDOM IS ME

Shot on a 5D camera with a skeletal crew and amongst 1000’s of raging EDM lovers at Sunburn, Goa, the making of this film was an exercise in resilience, perseverance and audacity for me. “Freedom is Me” is a surrealistic story about the death of loneliness and repression through the intoxicating and anthemic power of music. Something I very strongly believe in. I also wrote this film.

UNDONE

A fictional story about a young girl with a multiple personality disorder, “Undone” has been created specifically for digital platforms. The lead character of Tanya can be 5 people at any given point in time- a premise that continuously excites me. Three of these people are women, the fourth one is a man and the fifth, a child. “Undone” occupies a space in the thriller/supernatural genre with undertones of Indian mythology. “Undone” was shot on a 5D.

REVIVAL

Starring supermodel Lisa Haydon, “Revival”, is a lyrical and sensual behind-the-scenes music video created for the launch of fashion designer Surily Goel’s latest collection, also called Revival. “Revival” was shot on a 5D and was a super fun shoot because everyone was bopping along to the music the whole time.

FEVER

Another music video starring Lisa Haydon and for Surily Goel’s other collection, “Fever” is a sexual, in-your-face film that underlines the symbiotic alliance between fashion and music. This film was shot on a 5D.

ELLE BREAST CANCER
PSA 1

Though this film is essentially a PSA for the Elle Breast Cancer Campaign, the notion behind having former supermodel Mehr Jesia Rampal front the campaign was to inject many doses of glamour and sophistication into an otherwise very generic PSA. It was a pleasure shooting this film because everything came together in an enchanted way on location. From Mehr, to the crew, to the setting (the stunning Good Earth store in Mumbai). This film was shot on 35mm.

ELLE BREAST CANCER
PSA 2

Starring Priyanka Bose, this film aims to celebrate the power of womanhood through a Maya Angelou poem. This film was shot on 5D in the wilds of Thane.

WORLD GOLD COUNCIL

This TVC was designed to entice customers that buy gold during the auspicious Indian holiday season that begins with the Navratras and ends with Diwali. This TVC was shot on 35mm. Whenever I have to do something in a very traditional Indian setting, I get a bit nervous, but then I’m surprised at how naturally it all comes to me.

BUDLIGHT

The Budlight mock ad film was shot with a 5D for the MO FILM competition held in Cannes every year. The film was shortlisted for the final awards category and when we discovered that, we jumped with joy. This film was essentially a bunch of friends (all aspiring actors & directors) coming together to do something zany.

LAO MEHENDIYA MUSIC VIDEO

The first film that I ever directed was this music video, a medley of songs from the popular Punjabi folk singer Minu Bakshi’s superhit album of wedding songs. This video was shot on 35mm, and I was terribly nervous before this shoot, but from the moment I said Action, it felt like a homecoming. I knew that I was here to stay.

ON THE COUCH WITH KOEL

On the couch with Koel was a talk show hosted by Koel Purie and produced & directed by me. Koel and I conceptualized the show on a mere whim and we ended up creating more than 130 episodes of the show, all of them directed by me. The show was shot on a 5D and a 7D and that red fur couch has been everywhere- an empty swimming pool, an abandoned train, anunder construction building and even a ladies toilet.
